An elderly homeless gal
with a bandana,
cruises the sidewalks of
Old Town’s Duval.
While hoards of tourists
soak up the sights,
she scavenges thru trash
in front of them all.
Styrofoam box after box,
she opens the lid,
studying if fresh enough
for the partaking.
Sampling a nibble of this,
a mouthful of that;
then on to the next course,
no box forsaking.
With elegance and grace,
trash can after can,
selectively choosing what
looks and smells best.
Other’s discarded garbage,
is this diva’s feast;
it’s how she’s surviving
here in Key West.
